Search Engines

Use Search Engines if you don't have an exact World Wide Web address (URL). For best results, read the helpful search tips at each site, and use more than one search engine for each search. Questions about which search engine to use? Try Searchenginewatch or Search Engine Showdown, sites that review and evaluate all the search engines, tell how they work and how to use them, and offer tips on creating web pages and submitting URLs.

Search Engines

Search Engines offer a variety of options. Try several to see which works best for you. Take advantage of limiting your search to "Web," "News," "Images," etc.

Academic Search Engines
  • Google Scholar "enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web".
  • Windows Live Academic ...now in beta. We currently index content related to computer science, physics, electrical engineering, and related subject areas
  • Scirus:for scientific information only. Check scholarly journals and web sites
  • The Infography "The Infography (in-fóg-ra-phy) serves as the antidote to information overload and qualitatively suspect sources. It integrates citations to books, Internet sites, journal articles, and other sources that provide excellent information. Each subject entry in The Infography refers the learner to six highly recommended sources of information, and most subject specialists also include a longer list of other worthwhile sources for further research"
  • Science.gov searches "Deep Web" sources from 12 government agencies; subjects include health, environment, biology, energy, etc.
  • SearchGov.com search by publication, branch of government, state, department, and more
  • SearchEdu.com
  • Social Science Information Gateway a directory with subject areas including environmental studies, geography, politics, psychology, women's studies, plus lots more
  • InfoMine Scholarly Internet Resource Collections from the University of California Libraries, with over 22,000 links to significant, well-organized and well-described Internet accessible databases, journals, textbooks, guides to the Internet for most disciplines, reference resources, conference proceedings, and more.
  • Easy Searcher 2 categorizes a wide variety of search engines via drop down menus.
