The Sustainable Community Development (SCD) Program
was born in 1996. It grew out of students in the Adult Degree Program
(ADP) expressing a need for an integrated program of study that would
give them opportunities to explore ways to offer service to both human
and natural communities. Prescott College’s ADP now has about 50
students working in SCD, and another small group working in the sister
field of Sustainable Community Education (SCE). To date, the program
has graduated more than two dozen students in SCD and related degree
paths.
Students are doing programs in their
own communities in such places as Lopez Island, Washington, Sandy
Lake, Pennsylvania, Utopia, Texas, Pomona,
California, Jackson, Wyoming, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Salida, Colorado,
Mesa, Arizona, Branchville, New Jersey, and other states. We also
have international students in the program from nations such as Colombia,
Switzerland, Ecuador, and Canada.
The SCD community profiles feature
the coursework, community involvement, and personal visions of a few current
students and alumni of the Sustainable
Community
Development (SCD) Program. A diverse sampling of both undergraduate and graduate
students is included here, as well as the work of several individuals who
are pursuing interests in the specific SCD areas of Sustainable Community
Education (SCE) and Environmental Studies (ES). These brief yet informative
glimpses into students’ actual coursework and lifework are intended
to assist prospective students in grasping a fuller understanding of the
broad range of learning experiences possible within the program. All profiled
students have expressed a willingness to be contacted via email by prospective
students seeking additional feedback on the actual experiences and individual
perspectives of students already involved in the program. These profiles were
also created to serve as a valuable community resource for those current
SCD students and alumni wishing to exchange ideas, support, and network with
one another during their curriculum and throughout their lifelong sustainability
pursuits. Feel free to browse our SCD
community profiles.
If you are already a member of our SCD community
and would like to share your profile, please use the “Contact” link
