Mathieu's educational philosophy is rooted in landscape-based learning, an educational approach in which modes of travel serve as means to better understand the natural, physical and cultural world.  In this approach, adventure-based skills development, from boating to climbing, creates the platform for empowerment and leadership-skills development while our minds are attuned to learning about the natural and human landscape.  Mathieu's intention is using these stimuli as the starting point for training aspiring outdoor, conservation and land management professionals.

Research

Research

Mathieu's research interests are focused on the natural resources, recreation and tourism of the American West.  His scientific research focus includes studies in recreation ecology in the Grand Canyon and on other western rivers and wilderness areas.  Of latest personal interest is the study of mountains and mountain culture and the role it plays in the mythology of the West.

Mathieu Brown is co-director and co-coordinator of Grand Canyon Semester, a biennial offering in partnership with Grand Canyon National Park.  The interdisciplinary and experiential based program seeks to further the leadership skills of aspiring outdoor, conservation and land management professionals.
