Ph.D. Program

Ph.D. in Education with a Concentration in Sustainability Education

The Prescott College Ph.D. program views education as both the act or practice of educating or being educated and the study of education as a continuous process of researching, documenting, and implementing positive changes where needed in traditional models and methods.

Education for sustainability, therefore, is the act or practice of learning how to achieve global and local sustainable communities. The desired outcome is an informed, involved citizenry with the social and scientific literacy, commitment, and creative problem-solving skills to engage in responsible individual and cooperative actions toward a sustainable society.

Education as sustainability, on the other hand, is the study of the educational process from basic literacies to lifelong learning strategies with the goal of reforming education itself. Achieving sustainability in all dimensions of human existence depends on adopting educational paradigms, programs, and practices that manifest and support change toward a sustainable, secure society.

Although these two aspects of sustainability education can be defined differently and are often studied separately, they are interdependent and students are encouraged to consider both in their programs of study.

The program is primarily designed for teachers, educators, and community activists; for educational, training or administrative and supervisory staff involved with government and non-government organizations; and for people working in related fields. Prospective doctoral students should have significant experience in their proposed individual focus areas. This life and work experience may include educational administration, teaching, research, writing, consulting, business, communications, community development, advocacy, public relations, policy development and analysis, politics, or any of a number of other possibilities.
