The HLC Reaccreditation Process and Self-Study

Prescott College is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).  This type of institutional accreditation by regional commissions is the foundation for the quality assurance of higher education in the United States.  It is also the mechanism by which eligibility for federal funding for financial aid is determined.  Maintaining our accreditation status is one of the most important responsibilities of the college.  Our last accreditation visit took place in 1999; at that time, Prescott College was granted a ten year reaccreditation.

Prescott College is currently engaged in preparation for the HLC site visit, to take place on November 2-4, 2009.  We have undertaken an extensive examination of the current state of the college.  This will culminate in the creation of the Self-Study Report required by HLC as part of the reaccreditation process.

The questions addressed by the Self-Study will come from two sources.  First, the HLC has established five criteria for accreditation.  Our Self-Study Report must demonstrate that we meet all these criteria. Second, the Self-Study process will be responsive to the concerns of members of all constituencies of the college.  Thus, we will use this as an opportunity to examine how the college can best improve its performance on issues raised through processes such as the development of the Strategic Plan, the work of the 2010 Committee, and the Equinox Process.

The Self-Study is spearheaded by a steering committee consisting of faculty, administrators, students, board members and staff.  The charge of this steering committee is to organize the Self-Study process, gather the necessary evidence, invite input and feedback from the community, draft the chapters of the report, gather comments from third parties, produce the final report and prepare for the site visit of the HLC evaluation team.

There will be several opportunities for the community to participate in this process.  The evidence for the Self-Study Report will come from many different parts of the college, and the committee request participation in this effort.  Additionally, the Self-Study Committee will circulate a survey on community priorities publish all information about the Self-Study process on the college web site and circulate drafts of the Self-Study Report itself.

On this webpage, you will find links to many of the key documents related to the Self-Study process.  If you have comments on any of this, please direct them to the Self-Study Coordinator, Jack Herring.  He can be reached at 928-350-2227 or by email at jherring@prescott.edu
