Adult Degree Program

Applying to the Program

Prescott College admissions counselors are available to assist you in any way during the application and admissions process.  When you're ready to turn your passions into a rewarding profession, we will be ready to help you!

Our applicants tend to have the following characteristics in common:

  • A preference for experiential learning rather than conventional classroom work
  • Personal and/or job commitments that make it difficult to attend a traditional college
  • The need or desire for further learning

Admissions
Since we are a small, private college, the Admissions Office is able to employ a highly personalized admissions process. The Admissions Office staff thoughtfully and carefully considers all applications to the College. Admission criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Ability to express and/or demonstrate motivation, self-direction, and an interest in learning

  • Prior success and perseverance in college and/or employment
  • Appropriateness of a non-traditional program for attaining your goals
  • Preliminary advising

The purpose of the admission advising process is to assist applicants in determining if the Adult Degree Program meets their educational objectives. Prospective students may schedule an appointment with an Admissions Counselor to review prior college transcripts and work experience, discuss and clarify academic goals, and plan a course of study. The Admissions staff also estimates how long it will take prospective students to complete their programs.

Prospective students are actively involved in the advising process so that individual goals and interests are addressed. Through this process, degree-seeking individuals choose a competence (major) and two breadths (minors). A student's prior college courses are considered as well as the proposed Prescott College classes that will combine to fulfill the graduation requirements.

Courses completed at other accredited colleges with a C grade or better will be applied to the student's proposed program at Prescott College. Relevant courses are applied to the student's competence and breadth areas during the initial advising session. (In some cases, courses from unaccredited colleges may be documented through a conversion portfolio for which Prescott College credit may be awarded. This option is available after the student has been accepted to the Adult Degree Program.)

Application Requirements
Applicants must send the following information to the Adult Degree Program office:

  • A completed application form

  • $25 application fee

  • Two essays - a two to three page autobiographical essay and a two to three page essay reflecting on your past academic experiences and your educational goals
  • Two letters of recommendation from academic and/or professional sources (letters from relatives do not satisfy the requirement)

  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended since high school, even if it has been many years since the applicant attended the school(s)

In addition, prospective students are required to complete an admissions interview that will include preliminary academic advising, either by telephone or in person.

Prescott College does not require any specific prior coursework for acceptance; however, applicants to the program are encouraged to show the following in order to increase their chances of acceptance:

  • A minimum of 30 semester hours of prior college coursework or CLEP (College Level Examination Program) equivalent from regionally-accredited colleges earned at a C grade or higher; coursework should be in general liberal arts areas such as social science, humanities, math/science, and writing/communication. (Some applicants with fewer credits may be admitted provisionally.)
  • Demonstrate college level writing skills.
  • Show consistent academic potential.

Please contact the admissions office with any questions.
