24 days until the 1st Annual Coming Home Weekend at Prescott
College! I hope that you will be able to attend this PC-packed
weekend with
educational programs and fun activities. (You can even register
online now.) I've talked with so many alumni this past year
over the phone
and email - I'm hoping that I get a chance to meet some of you
this fall, and re-introduce you to PC and our evolving campus.
For our northern California alumni, I hope to see you in Napa
on October 11th for the Western Regional Gathering at Stag's Leap
Wine Cellars. It's going to be a beautiful weekend to take a drive
to wine country!
Please call or write with any questions about the flurry of events
upcoming for PC alumni. Hope to see you sometime soon!

P.S. - Check out this month's issue of Backpacker magazine and
you will see that Prescott College is ranked at the top
outdoor college! "There's simply nothing like Prescott College's new-school
take on adventure education and environmental studies."
Grace Wicks-Schlosser (RDP ’02) was gracious enough to spend
the day with PC Admissions Director Shari Sterling during a recent
recruiting trip to Philadelphia. Grace and Shari visited four high
schools, met with students and guidance counselors, and spread
the word about PC. In addition, Board of Trustees member and alumna
Karen McCreary (RDP ’73) recently represented PC at a regional
college fair in Salt Lake City. These are the first steps in the
development of a formal regional recruiting program that will use
local alumni across the country as a resource for visiting high
schools, meeting with prospective students, and being PC representatives
in their home communities.
Layne Longfellow (Former Faculty) now has his CD, Longfellow Reads
Longfellow (Illustrated Edition) on sale online at cdbaby.com.
The reviewer at cdbaby.com writes of Layne's work:
"
One of the best Spoken Word albums to pass by discriminating ears
at CD Baby in years. This is not your usual poetry album, but none
less than the classic, timeless gems of master poet, Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, superbly performed with utmost sensitivity and nuance.
The evocative, plaintive musical backdrop
sets an emotional context of beauty, longing and mystery, appropriately
and colorfully enhancing these moving, heartrending poems. You
will be hanging on every word as these masterpieces are not just
read but relived and performed with the heart and soul of a
genius. An incredibly beautiful listening experience."

Lorrie Bonds Lopez, BA '74
April 8, 2003: Lorrie Bonds Lopez New Chief of Staff of Risk Reduction
and Environmental Stewardship.
Chief of Staff Lorrie Bonds Lopez brings three principle skills
to RRES Division: experience in business coaching; experience in
negotiation, motivation and implementation; and expertise in the
facilitation of organizational change. As a coach, Lorrie consulted
business owners and managers to assess organizational functioning
and to implement interventions appropriate to improving productivity.
Her principal responsibility was to coach executive staff to hone
their management and leadership style to more effectively accomplish
results.
As a senior consultant, she was responsible for the development
of business coaching practices and client programs including executive
leadership and management training, performance appraisal systems,
employment policies and procedures, time planning and scheduling.
As the controller for two companies supplying both domestic and
international customers, Lorrie was responsible for all aspects
of financial accounting. She later used these skills in her own
consulting company preparing financial reports for small businesses
and as an account specialist for an international computer firm.
Lorrie’s team building and management skills were developed
during a decade as a Course Director for Outward Bound managing
26-day wilderness courses. She was responsible for budgeting, staffing,
management, logistics, training, field program quality, safety
practices and implementation, instructional quality and equipment
evaluation and procurement. And for producing the result: having
people accomplish seemingly impossible tasks.
Responsibilities in her new job include strategic planning and
implementation, outreach coodination, division systems, management
coaching, communication and space management. Before accepting
her current position Lorrie Bonds Lopez worked with the Laboratory’s
Ombuds Office. She earned her BA degree in education from Prescott
College and an MA in counseling psychology from Southwestern College.

John Schmit (RDP ’97) and Laurie
Dix (ADP '01, former staff) were married on August 2, 2003 in Silverthorne, Colorado. It was
a small wedding with about 50 guests...very lovely occasion. Chris
and Kelly Sherwin conducted the ceremony, which was just a blessing.
We honeymooned in the Bahamas, on both Andros Island and Nassau,
diving, snorkeling, kayaking, biking, and, well, of course, honeymooning!
Laurie is completing her Masters of Social Work degree in April
2004 at Grand Valley State University and is an intern in the GVSU
Counseling and Career Development Center. She is working on a thesis
this year around the theme of Wellness Interventions in Social
Work Practice. John received his MFA from the University of Iowa,
and is currently an Assistant Professor of Film and Video Production
at GVSU. He is also developing another documentary on renewable
energy.
We would love to hear from friends we've lost touch with, and

I first visited the Prescott College campus in 1969 after a representative
from the College spoke to my class at Carl Hayden High School in
Phoenix. I decided not to go to college at that point. A few years
later I was a founder of Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe and
later Satisfied Mind Bookstore in Prescott. After the demise of
Satisfied Mind I decided to finish my BA through the Adult Degree
Program. I graduated in January 2003 with a competence in Public
History and breadths in Art and Liberal Arts.
In August Rick Taylor (aka Abner) decided to go to Austin to pursue
a Master of Science in Information Studies (what used to be a Masters
in Library Science) and I was hired to fill his position at the
Prescott College Library. I am happy to be here surrounded by the
kind of books I offered in my bookstores and the kind of people
are making the world a better place.

The big news is I recently started a marketing consulting firm
called bob. (www.bobcanhelp.com). My business partner Michael
and I
conceptualized it over the past year as a firm that will
help small and non-profit businesses market themselves sustainably.
What we mean by ‘sustainable marketing’ is marketing
that; (1) creates positive cash flow for a company thus sustaining
the company (2) communicates value creatively and honestly (3)
takes into account the
environmental and social impact of the method and messages used.
We don't advocate misleading messages, resource-intensive vehicles
or socially
irresponsible advertising that encourages over consumption.
This is the culmination of a journey begun at Prescott College
that combines the practical with the spiritual and activism with
pragmatism. We feel helping good small businesses do better will
lead to a more diverse
and thus more stable and healthy economy and society. Feel free
to check out our website and spread the word.
The bigger news is that I'm getting married on Oct. 16th to a
rare Scottish rose (by way of New Jersey) Sherry Bradley! Sherry
is the one I've been looking for all this time. We look forward
to many years together.
Life is good, hope it is with all of you too.
Lisa Lamberson, RDP ‘00
Happy to be back in AZ after some time gallivanting around as a
ski bum in Jackson, a short stint as a seasick lobster woman in
Maine and then the Assistant Director of an adventure based day
camp in Ketchum, ID. I felt a draw towards stability and a home
to live for more than four months and so Flagstaff is it for now.
I’ve taken a job as a Montessori teacher and my multi-age
class of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders are wonderful. I’m looking
forward to a snow filled winter and some time skiing the volcano.
Please check in if you find yourself in Flag, and remember these
words from everyone’s favorite bear, Winnie the Pooh: "Some
say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day." Cheers!
John Schneider, RDP ‘88
Hannah (my wife) and Emma (daughter #1, 2yrs. +) were joined by
a new family member on August 22 at 7:10am when Phoebe Rydgren
Schneider arrived weighing in at chunky 9 lbs and a length 21 inches.
Her timing was impeccable as it extended my summer break for a
few more days! Family life is great and teaching gets better every
year.
Joseph Scanlon, RDP ‘93
After a wonderful three-year experience as the program director
of The Boojum Institute, I’ve made the transition to the
classroom environment at Live Oak School in San Francisco. Live
Oak School is a progressive education K-8 independent school in
the heart of the city whose learning philosophy is based in experiential
education. No grades, a few tests and lots of hand on activities
are the norm – sound familiar? I’m currently teaching
Life and Physical Sciences to the 7th and 8th grades and starting
to develop curriculum n the role of science in environmental studies
with a focus on the bay are during my second year. The school also
places an emphasis on maintaining a strong community of students,
teachers and families to support the learning that occurs here.
Living in San Francisco has fulfilled a life long dream and I revel
in the natural beauty that surrounds the city, the diversity it
has and the great culture one can experience here. But how can
you not miss Prescott College and the great community there!? Best
to all.

PC Alumni Store
What is the Alumni Store?
The idea behind the Alumni Store is to have a forum in which
alumni can sell their goods and services to the PC community
while at the same time helping to raise money for Prescott
College. We would like to have an assortment of goods in the
Alumni House during Coming Home Weekend this October 24-26
for PC community members to purchase. We hope to cultivate
the Alumni Store into both a Prescott-based business as well
as an online store.
How It Works
If you have any items (books, CDs, art, services, etc.) that
you have personally created or sell, and would like to include
them for sale in the Alumni Shop, please contact Matuschka
(PCAA President, j.matuschka@verizon.net) or Rachel Yoder in
the Alumni Office at PC.
The financial split would work with the seller receiving 60%
of retail price. The remaining 40% will go to the Crossroads
Center, the new “green” facility being built on campus.
Selling your work will help fundraise for this important effort,
validate your work, and provide an audience for your creations.
Volunteers from Sharlot Hall and students from Prescott College
helped recover nearly 200 complete bottles and over 20 boxes
of glass and metal from the Crossroads Center constuction site
this past week. It appears that after the hospital burned on
June 8, 1940, some of the remaining building and its contents
were pushed over toward the creek. In this way the bank level
was raised and extended. Materials were unearthed when removing
the loose fill to get down to solid ground for the foundation
of the new building. An exhibit will be created that tells
the cultural history of this piece of ground and illustrates
that history with objects we found. The material will be cleaned
and analyzed at the Sharlot Hall Museum and diagnostice items
will be kept for future research and exhibits.
