The Biscuit - Prescott College Alumni Newsletter

November 2003

From the Alumni Office

As fall whirls its windy way into Prescott, we are also winding down from an October full of alumni activities. Alumni gathered in Napa, CA and Prescott to reconnect and support PC in well-attended and, more importantly, fun events. Read more about recent gatherings at the Alumni Website, now with a new look thanks to a full-site-redesign by PC web administrator Kevin Beyer.

In addition to our anticipation of turkey and mashed potatoes later this month, we're also looking forward to the release of the Alumni Directory. The official release date of the directories is after Thanksgiving, with them arriving in your mailbox throughout the month of December.  Thanks again to all of you who participated in this project.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Alumni Updates

You Can Help

You can make a real difference in someone's life. 1977 Prescott College alumnus Dick Hanna is in need of a kidney transplant and is looking for a suitable donor. Suitable donors need to have blood type A or O and be in excellent health.  Potential donors will receive an extensive series of tests and health screenings at no cost to the donor.  Read more (pdf file).

Brandi Solace and Jonas BeanJonas Bean (RDP '99) and Brandi Solace (RDP '00) were married on June 28, 2003 in Lena, IL.  After their honeymoon in Iceland, they returned home to Kirkland, WA.   Brandi is in her second year of medical school at Bastyr University studying Naturopathic Medicine.  Jonas is an outdoor educator at Forest Ridge H.S. and a member of the Seattle Mountain Rescue team.

Angela Hawse, RDP '86/MAP '01 and past instructor for the AE program was recently voted onto the Board of Directors for the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA).

From the Tucson Center
The Student and Alumni Art show held on Friday, October 24th at the Tucson Center was a huge success.  There were several different art displays, including pottery, photography, and paintings, as well as a community mural.  There was also live music by local band, Sol Gypsies.  The turn out for the event was excellent.

Well, what can one say about a life that takes you from the mountains of Arizona to the Bay of San Francisco to the wine caves of France except...it's MINE! Clearly only a map and compass class with Steve Munsell could have prepared me for such navigation!

Top Five list of things that are new...

1) I'm living in Paris doing international marketing for Corporate America.

2) I got married in August to an amazing man, who just happens to be a professional French chef (although an American who's Uncle owns NOC so I didn't stray to far from the Prescott standard.)

3) I'm retiring from Corporate America in January to travel in S.E. Asia in search of whatever life brings us and the perfect green curry chicken!

4) We are returning to the bay area in the Spring to sleep on Joe Scanlon's futon (which used to me mine!) until we find a new home.

5) I am missing Prescott more than I have in many years...a sign that I need to get back to my roots -- hence the trip to S.E. Asia. Hope life is treating all of you with wonder and amazement.   Let us know when you are in the Bay Area and we'll treat you to dinner at Joe's! Cheers!

Since graduating from PC in 1997 I have received my Masters of Social Work and have moved to Venice, California where I am Director of Family Services for Venice Community Housing Corporation. Two years ago I reunited with an "old love from high school." Joe Warnett and I are getting married February 21, 2004 here in Malibu, California! Joe has been in the film industry for 10 years as an editor for feature films. We love our life here by the ocean. I miss PC and the community there...but have found a nice niche here in Venice/Santa Monica! I would love to hear from any old friends...call or e mail 310-450-0983 or deankatherine@comcast.net or even better, come visit us at our home on the beach! I hope each of you are well and living the dreams you dreamt one afternoon.

Brad Moskowitz, RDP '98

Although we still yearn for the climate and landscape of the southwest, our growing family now loves the seasonal changes of Vermont. However, the biggest change as of late is the addition of our second child, Asa Samuel Moskowitz.   Asa was born on June 4, 2003, and I made it back in the nick of time.   I was in the field with a wilderness Leadership course when I received "the call."  Thanks to an intricately detailed contingency plan and a lack of traffic at midnight, I was able to get home, bring my wife Gayle to the hospital, and help deliver the baby less than 45 minutes after we arrived!   Despite the sleep deprivation, we are doing great. Big brother, three-year-old Eli Mikal, is helpful with Asa as we are busy with work, stacking firewood, putting up the garden, and preparing for the winter wonderland of Vermont.

Shana Subelsky, RDP '00
I am the Youth Services Director at Mediation Services in Castro Valley, CA.   I train peer mediators at middle and high schools and help implement school's mediation programs.   Last year, I wrote a grant that helped to launch a new Parent-Teen Mediation Service.   The mediation panel is unique because youth and adults pair up to mediate parent-teen issues.   In addition to school mediation trainings, I co-facilitate the Professional

Mediation Trainings, lead customized conflict resolution workshops for youth and adults, and mediate cases.   I love my job!   Prescott College's self-directed learning really prepared me to transform what I am passionate

about into a fulfilling career.   I have continued mediating ever since I took the "Community Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution" course at

Prescott College.   Mediating and training youth to mediate meets my needs for peace and nonviolently resolving conflict through communication. I also attended an international peace camp this summer in Egypt! I was the leader of 4 American youth from the Bay Area. The organization is called Children's International Summer Village (CISV). Check out the website at www.cisv.org.

Granite Performing Arts Center

Andrea Luchese, RDP '94
will present a traditional solo Bharata Natyam recital as the culmination of her masters program in dance and spirituality.  Bharata Natyam originated in South India over 2,000 years ago, and was originally performed by devadasis (servants of God) as part of daily temple worship. Now the most popular classical dance style in India, Bharata Natyam combines both pure and communicative dance to portray universal themes and the rich heritage of Hindu culture.  A brief presentation and discussion facilitated by Andrea's graduate advisor Roxanne Kamayani Gupta, Ph.D. (author of A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance: The Yogini's Mirror) will immediately follow the performance for those who wish to attend. Read the press release .

Andrea spent five months in intensive training this year in south India under the tutelage of venerated masters V.P. and Shanta Dhananjayan. Since then, she has continued her training with Katherine Kunhiraman of Kalanjali Dances of India in Berkeley, California. She teaches and performs in southern Oregon and beyond. Free Admission. Hope to see you there!
