December 2004

Happy Holidays from Prescott College!

We here at the College wish you and your family and friends a peaceful and happy holiday season. We're grateful for a year of continued growth and excitement, and are looking forward to the joys and challenges of 2005.

Thank you also to the many volunteers, donors, and well-wishers who have supported the College over this past year.

ADP and MAP graduates will be celebrating this weekend at their graduation ceremony on the 4th, and RDPers will have baccalaureate and graduation next weekend on Friday and Saturday.  All these ceremonies will be held in the new Crossroads Center. Congratulations to our newest alumni!!

Now...who's ready for some fruitcake?

Happy Holidays!

1970s

Peter Nielsen (RDP ’75)

I work for Missoula County managing a local water quality protection program. My biggest project is cleanup of the Milltown Reservoir Superfund site, and removal of the Milltown Dam and Stimson Mill Dam on the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers. I am married with two sons, one in college at Gonzaga and the other a senior in high school. My wife Killeen is a nurse practitioner. I've stayed in touch with John Einersen, but have not heard from others who attended Prescott College in its last semester in 1974 and the first semester of the Prescott Center in 1975, when I attended. Would love to hear from old friends. nielsenkep@aol.com

1990s

Ellery Kimball, RDP ‘99

I miss the Violet Ray laundry mat in Prescott, where you could wash and dry your clothes for a buck and with your remaining quarters buy a few freshly made tamales. For the past four years I've been busy running a seven-acre organic farm on conservation land in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Through the farm stand and to restaurants in Boston I sell vegetables, flowers, herbs and raspberries and offer educational programs for kids during the summer.  I hope the chapel and the Butte Creek Cafe are still buzzing with music. I continue to frail the banjo with dirty fingers. www.blueheronfarmlincoln.com, ellerywk@hotmail.com

Michael Shay, RDP ’99

After time in Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and then Colorado, I moved back to my hometown of Austin in 2002. Since then I've been playing and teaching music here, both as a singer/songwriter/bandleader, and as a cellist. I just finished my second acoustic CD, "Lines of Darkness, Lines of Light," which will be available very soon through my website, www.michaelshay.com, or by contacting me directly (even better!). The cover and inside of the CD features art by Ann (Ann-Marie) Piambino, a roommate from RDP days. Anyone know where she is? I pulled a watercolor of hers out of the trash when we were moving out of the house at Oregon and Josephine, and look where it ended up! I'd love to hear from anyone from those days, as I wrap up a music degree through ADP (finishing in July '05). As soon as that's done, I will be setting off on a perpetual tour, so chances are, I'll be in you neck of the woods before too long! michael@michaelshay.com

2000s

Brad Tito, RDP ‘00

Hello everybody! Since I left Prescott in 2002, I attended the Milano Graduate School of the New School University in New York City where I graduated with a MS in Urban Policy Analysis and Management. I have since been working on Long Island for Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi as the Assistant to the Director of Environmental Coordination. We work on all kinds of interesting projects. For example, yesterday I heard a presentation from a company which will build a 140 megawatt off-shore wind project for the Long Island Power Authority. In a nutshell, my job is to plan projects which will save resources, conserve energy, and reduce pollution. VIVA Prescott College ! bradtito@hotmail.com

Steve Liptay, RDP ’03
Just wanted to drop a line - from NYC! I'm interning for the film company, Toxic Comedy, working on 'Melting Planet,' a documentary about global warming. In April, I'll be returning to the Texas gulf coast to continue plover and tern research with the Audubon Society's Coastal Bird Conservation Program. Get in touch if we're crossing paths. steveliptay@hotmail.com

The Annual Fund at Prescott College

It takes more than pocket change to create social change...

In just a few days, you'll be receiving a letter asking for your support of this year's Every gift counts!Change for Good Annual Fund Campaign

I hope you take a moment to review the letter and pamphlet on the Annual Fund, and to read about the five students featured in this year's campaign. Your charitable support benefits our students and campus greatly!

If you would like to make a gift to the Annual Fund, you may do so online , or by using the remittance envelope that will be included with your letter in December. Our first 500 donors will receive the 2005 PC Calendar as special thanks!

What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is composed of the donations given on a yearly basis from alumni, parents and other friends. These donations augment "general operating funds," and supports everything from scholarships and upgrades in technology, to library resources and our first-rate faculty.

Alumni News

-Model Alumni-

Alumnus Eric Husted (RDP '90) was recently pictured in Patagonia's magazine with his team of horses; together, they provide sustainable forestry management to Bayfield, CO. Eric and his company, Lorax Forest Care, were also featured in an article in the Durango Telegraph last year.

James MacAdam (RDP '01) was pictured in a recent Prana yoga attire catalog wearing, of all things, his hooded Prescott College sweatshirt. Thanks for the free advertising, James!

'Tis the season...

What's with the name?

"Biscuit" is a nickname for Prescott that locals often use. When out-of-towners visit, you'll often hear people explaining the proper pronunciation of "Prescott" as, "'Preskit' rhymes with 'Biscuit'." “The Biscuit” was chosen from among eight names by alumni vote in February 2003, and was submitted by alumnus Michael Shay (RDP ’99).
