Outdoorbaby.net

A message from RDP Alumnae Heidi Ahrens, RDP '99

I am very excited to let you know that I am launching a new website:

www.outdoorbaby.net

Outdoor baby.net is a website for families that enjoy the outdoors. It is a place where families can post a tip on great outdoor practices that they have tried with their children. In this way I hope to create a community that shares information on how to better support our adventures with little ones. This way maybe more children will become lovers of the outdoors and more parents will feel more supported in their attempts to venture outside with their children. One of the goals of this site is to also get families that may not be 100% sure on how to proceed in outdoors be more comfortable with their adventures. We will also have information about great trips to take.

For this new project to work for me, it requires the support of my friends and family. Please visit the site and post pictures and tips that could help other families like you enjoy the outdoors. If you can invite some of your other outdoor enthusiastic friends to visit and participate in the tip sharing, it would be great. So please send your friends a link to outdoorbaby.net and let them know how great this site is. If you want to help me further let me know and I can send you some promotional material that you could place in your local outdoor stores, etc.

Thank you so much for your support,

Heidi Ahrens

 RDP Student Showcase: Matt Hart

After the Shutter Clicks
By Matt Hart
moonshinephoto.googlepages.com

As a student at Prescott College I am often presented with some very unique opportunities that many people don’t get the chance to see and experience. I see this unique opportunity as both a blessing and a gift that I have the ability to share with others. One of the things that I really try to focus on as a photographer is creating simple, clean and straightforward images. All pictures are of a single moment in time. In my photographs I try to create an image that allows the audience to place themselves in the scene, an uncluttered and straightforward image that doesn’t need to be studied in order to be understood. The other thing that is especially important to me in my photographs is that they are authentic. Although I might have some clever and unconventional methods of getting angles and perspectives on certain shots, the things that are going on in my final photographs are 100% real. I have a rule for myself that if I can’t capture something as it is happening, then I shouldn’t try to recreate it on my own. I see the majority of my photography as an opportunity to give people a viewpoint into a different world: a chance to see the amazing places that are often unvisited, the struggle before the summit, the people that do it all, and everything in between. I think that one of the most important things that photography offers me, is the opportunity to share an experience or a feeling. I often find myself on the top of a mountain, or backpacking through a wilderness area, or simply sitting at home and wondering what other people in the world are doing at that very moment. My photographs are my contribution to fulfilling that curiosity in other people.

"Our culture has forgotten that the word ecology comes from the Greek word Ecos, which means Home. Ecology is the study of the Home, while economics is the management of the Home. How can we possibly understand the relationships of ecology and economics if we have lost the meaning of Home?"

The Poetry of Learning

by Michael Shay, ADP '07

I am a performer. Or so they say. Being a musician supposedly means I get up on stage, and do my thing in the spotlight for other people to see. It is no accident that my first performance under my own name, rather than as an accompanist, was at the Butte Creek Café at Prescott College. Call it experiential, call it trial by fire, call it a learning experience…for me it was a nightmare!

Many of the most sticky of my inner-workings were present in that “performance:” biting off an ambitious helping, losing my breath to my need for control, being late, procrastination, distraction… but most of all, the nervousness I remember experiencing was rooted in my desire to please others, rather than please myself. Looking out and seeing the dismay of the audience as it got to be an hour after the professed start of the show, as well as being probably more tuned into their own state of concern about the sloppy performance as it progressed than I was to my own pulse, my own voice.   Read more...

The Prescott College Office of Alumni Relations is pleased to invite you to a gathering of alumni, parents, and friends of Prescott College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Ashland, Oregon for a public lecture and conversation with Prescott College President,

Dr. Garvey's approach is rooted in the belief common within experiential education that all members of society, from student to public leaders, are resources for social transformation. "Prescott College has always challenged our students and faculty to think confidently and creatively about what it is we can do to make the world a better place," he explains. "Our students leave here with a solid grasp of the creative thinking and collaborative, practical action needed to make positive, lasting change."

The lecture will inspire dialogue around:

What biases and assumptions do I hold about different generations?
How can I facilitate communication and cooperation across generations?
What are the problems our next generation will face?
How can we assist future generations address sustainability issues?
What part can I play in creating a sustainable future?

Desert Star

Nominate a Desert Star

If you know a Prescott College alumnus that you would like to nominate as a Desert Star, please use the online nomination form or contact the Alumni Office at 877.350.2100 ext 4502, or alumni@prescott.edu.

This name, "Desert Stars," is inspired both by the incredible Northern Arizona night sky that is a treasured memory for every student who ever stargazed in the Southwest, and also for Monoptilon belioides, a tiny sunflower native to Arizona. The Desert Star program recognizes distinguished Prescott College alumni whose contributions have changed a community - large or small -
for the better.

ADP News

Contributed by:
Vicky Young, Ph.D.,
ADP Core Faculty, Coordinator for Native American Students, and Life Experience Coordinator

The Adult Degree Program (ADP) teacher education faculty and staff spent a considerable amount of time this past year and the early spring preparing for the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) site review team's visit. The team gave the College's teacher education programs a very favorable review. Watch for an official announcement from the President and Deans about the updates on our teacher certification programs, including Early Childhood Education offerings.

In March ADP alumni Dessa West was nominated for the Yavapai County New Teacher of the Year. She is a first year teacher in the Prescott Unified School District. Dessa had worked for many years as a paraprofessional before earning her degree and certification.

Vicky Young (ADP '95), ADP Core Faculty, serves on the Navajo Nation Teacher Education Consortium (NNTEC). The spring NNTEC meetings will be held at Dine College in April and in May at Northern Arizona University. The NNTEC's goals are to ensure that Navajo students enter teacher education programs of study that embrace and incorporate the students' Navajo language, culture, and history.

Furthermore, NNTEC is striving to ensure that Navajo students undertake appropriate research projects in their communities that honor Navajo traditions. The NNTEC has hosted an Institutional Review Board (IRB) symposium last year. It will sponsor another IRB forum this spring.

Also Nancy Mattina and Jan Kempster may want to contribute information about the wonderful contributions that they have made to the College with Moodle and the Writing and Learning Center.

Class Notes

Anna Marie Marriott, ADP '04
My life is divided between Ecuador, my home since the 70’s and California. I am the grandmother of a lovely spiritual being (Isabella, 2 ½) and presently awaiting the arrival of her brother. Since graduating from the ADP program in 2004 I am dedicated to community service. No more paid jobs for now! It is time to give back. When I am in Ecuador, the Damien Foundation is my focus. My efforts are concentrated on crafts, counseling and recreational therapy. I always walk away feeling that the patients themselves give me far more then I can possibly give them. This confirms my belief that our lives become more meaningful through service. My life is filled with gratitude for those educators at Prescott College, who encouraged me and gave me the confidence to achieve my goal. I would love to hear from others, especially those involved in human service work and invite you to visit Ecuador. Please see my email in class notes on the PC website.

Please enjoy the pictures of the gallery and come visit. I will be down here for part of every year.
