"Our culture has forgotten that the word ecology comes from the Greek word Ecos, which means Home. Ecology is the study of the Home, while economics is the management of the Home. How can we possibly understand the relationships of ecology and economics if we have lost the meaning of Home?"

1st Place Suzanne Tito Alligator Juniper Poetry Award
I thought it was over when you dragged your trunk into the red hall,
But then I found your brain under the bed.
I thought it was over when the purple curtain drew,
But then the mother-daughter sword swallowers stepped into the light.
I thought it was over when the yellow tape stretched across the driveway,
But then I saw you roll by in the green Buick.
I thought it was over when we strangled the ewe behind the hedge,
But then I found your heart in the tub.
I thought it was over when the owl hooted down the moon,
But the blue light remained until I saw the black road again.
I thought it was over when the villagers reached the castle gates,
But we destroyed the evidence and rode the goats over the Urals.

"Prince William Sound: A Celebration of Life and Landscape" Join Prescott College Professor of Environmental Studies and world naturalist Walt Anderson in an exploration of one of the most visually stunning and ecologically interesting environments on earth. Walt will team with renowned Captain Dean Rand of the Discovery as they share their unique perspectives on Alaska’s great natural beauty and abundant wildlife. Participants will be traveling in style, while having intimate contact with the natural world and learning from these experts. Our Classic Discovery Voyage samples the natural wonders of Prince William Sound. Years of travel and exploration in the Sound have resulted in a destination list of "favorite" places for the Discovery crew and we’ll take full advantage of their insider's knowledge. Wildflower meadows, rainforest trails, calving glaciers, whale watching, photography, shore side hikes, kayaking, sightseeing and a whole lot more await you on this classic encounter with the world-class beauty of Prince William Sound.
Our small group experience (only 12 clients) is a very unique opportunity to enjoy Alaska. The trip includes hiking, kayaking, photography and lots of nature interpretation and educational classes. We’ll live onboard the MV Discovery for 6 days with fabulous gourmet meals and wines at dinner and opportunities to explore this amazing location with a dedicated and passionate crew. The Javelina has been designated as the "unofficial" mascot of Prescott College alumni and students by the PCAA because it will eat anything, is always having a bad hair day, is dangerous when cornered, disrupts the lives of retirees, is invasive and highly adaptive, and multiplies prolifically.
In July 2003, Dan was severely mauled by a grizzly bear while returning to a trailhead after a day of fishing.
"I lost both eyes during the mauling and was left completely blind. Since then I have undergone 8 major surgeries and have been getting my life back together. I have learned many skills for the blind, gotten married, had my first child, bought a home, and now I'm completing a masters in social work maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I am currently a mental health clinician intern at a community mental health agency here in Anchorage."
"I think if I had not gone blind I would still be recreating in the wilderness with a lot of my time. However, losing my sight has pushed me to spend far more time advancing my career. I love being of service to people. In social work we use an ecological systems framework to address problems for individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Problems are addressed from a micro-level of what might be happening in an individual's thoughts, to the macro-level of how a social policy may be affecting an individual or family. Being at Prescott College helped me to learn about critical thinking skills and the idea of self-directed action. The process of creating goals and quantifiable objectives to demonstrate progress towards those goals is a framework that I have used over and over again in my career path."
To read more about Dan, check out the Anchorage Daily News, Sunday, January 20, 2008 front page story: "Blinded by a bear, mauling victim moves on with life: grizzly took his sight, but not his future."
