Junior Girl Scout Badges
for Girls 8-11
Most Junior Scout programs take place over one day, but for some its easier and more fun to spend all weekend, or even a vacation week completing one badge or more! Every session includes an introduction to horses, lessons around safety, and as much time as possible spent hands-on with the horses grooming, doing games and activities, or just forming a bond with their new equine friends. For longer programs, overnight stay in a bunkhouse and/or camping may be available, depending on the season. Group size is limited to 12 (8 for riding programs) unless special arrangements are made.
The Choice is Yours - Decision-making is a skill you use every single day of your life. Learn about how decisions are made, look at past ones, and ahead to ways to make future ones easier. Girls work with horses to see how pressure can make us move in one direction, when we really want to go in another, and role-play making healthy decisions in real life.
Lead on - Girls explore leadership qualities in women they admire and in themselves, and discover what horses have to teach about partnership, confidence, and communication!
Being my Best - Spend time exploring your talents and the power of positive thinking, and doing activities with horses like "Life's Little Obstacles" that focus on setting goals and reaching them.
Healthy Relationships - Learn about friendship, praise, and practice non-verbal communication with the experts - the horses! This badge is earned as girls do activities and play games with horses and each other about relationships, friendship and communication.
Pet Care (focused on horses!) - Every girl wants a pony, but what would it really be like to own one? Learn about what horses eat, common illnesses, and how to care for a horse like it was your own. This badge works best over a weekend stay, or combined with other badges over a week to get the true feel of caring for a horse!
Horse Fan - Are you a horse fan? Want to learn more about horses? We'll be hands-on with horses, and learn how they think, and how to keep ourselves safe around them by helping them feel safe too. While we're at it, we'll learn horsemanship skills such as haltering, grooming, how to saddle and bridle a horse, and how to care for tack. This badge does not include riding when earned in one day (but it's a great intro for girls who want to work toward their "Horse Rider" badge too!).
Horse Rider* - Riding a horse can be exciting and fun! Before we ever get on a horse, we want to know that we can communicate with it safely on the ground, so time is spent learning how to lead, bend, and back a horse before we saddle and mount up. Then we'll practice all of the communication we've just learned while learning how to walk, trot, stop, turn and back up. We'll play games on horseback like "Simon Says" and walking "Red Light-Green Light", and practice our steering with figure 8's and serpentine patterns.
Camp Together, Outdoor Fun or Your Outdoor Surroundings* - How can these outdoor badges be earned with horses?! Girls meet over five full days - three days are spent learning how to communicate with and safely ride horses (as well as learning about nature, taking short hikes and planning for their trip!) and the final two days are spent on a camping trip WITH the horses. With instructor help, Girls will brainstorm safety tips, learn Leave No Trace principles, make a food and gear list, and then ride out to a camp where they pitch tents or sleep under the stars while their horses sleep nearby. Then in the morning, it's time to make breakfast, break camp, and ride home! Any of these badges are great to combine with another (especially Pet Care, Horse Fan, Horse Rider, or The Choice is Yours) over a week-long camp.
* Badges that involve riding or camping take more time to complete, and camping badges may require an overnight.
