The Youth Leadership Program is dedicated to providing ongoing opportunities for youth to develop their own leadership skills, and share them with others.
We are in the process of designing year-round "Wrangler-in-Training" programs for youth who are interested in honing thier own horsemanship & leadership skills, and then bringing them to younger groups of students and youth in their community.
These mentor programs are also designed to provide teens with the skills necessary to be eligible to work summers as Junior Wranglers at the Chauncey Ranch YMCA summer camp.
In addition, CLS is available to provide leadership, relational horsemanship, horse-packing, and service-based curriculum for Wrangler-in-Training programs at other camps who are looking for exciting and comprehensive programs for thier summer WITs.
See below for an example of a CLS Wrangler-in-Training Program, and student reactions!
2006 Youth Leadership "Wrangler in Training " Program at Chauncey Ranch YMCA

The 10-day intensive curriculum for Chauncey’s six 14-17 year old W.I.T’s included riding and horsepacking skills, relational horsemanship, and leadership skills such as communication, team building, respect, self-awareness and conflict resolution. The program culminated in a 5-day horsepacking expedition where the students applied all they had learned in an intense group travel environment – made all the more challenging by the need to tend and care for the 10 horses that were part of the group. After their trip was completed, the W.I.T.’s returned to camp to apply their leadership skills assisting counselors with campers on trail rides and in daily activities.
“How did I change my relationship to myself? Well, getting along with certain people, being confident in myself, being open minded and having fun and enjoying myself with horses.” Jamie, age 15
"I learned that you actually have to depend on people sometimes [and] I learned that I don’t have to be nervous and scared all the time.” Lexxi, age 16
Kylor, 15, of Phoenix, AZ: One of the most important things he learned from being with his horse "was how to ask and be more patient."
