Loren's experience in education spans 35 years. He retired from being Superintendent of School for the Salem County Special Services and Vocational Technical School Districts in NJ.  Before holding that position he had been Superintendent of the Pittsgrove Township School District.  And, prior to serving as a superintendent Loren had been a teacher, curriculum supervisor and principal.

His experience in higher education includes teaching Philosophy & Religion at The Richard Stockton College on NJ for 9 years, teaching graduate courses in school law and finance at Rowan University, and teaching a variety of courses at local community colleges.

In addition to these years in public K-12 and higher education, Loren also was Assistant Professor of Early Christian Literature for 8 years at the Reformed Episcopal Seminary in Philadelphia and served for one year at the Director of the Monteverde Friends School in Costa Rica.

Loren's passion is for inclusive, student-centered education.  He has attempted to apply principles of student-directed curriculum, constructivist pedagogy and non-violent communication as a teacher and administrator.  As a school and district leader Loren has focused on consensus decision making and maintaining the moral compass of the organization.  Throughout his career in public education, Loren has attempted to infuse the principals of progressive education and social equity in the broader system.

Background & Experience

Research (Return to top)

Although he views himself primarily as a practitioner informed by research, rather than primarily as a researcher, Loren has engaged in study and research throughout his academic life.  His early Research interests focused on the influence of Greco-Roman thought on emerging Christianity in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.  More recently his interests have been related to education.  Specifically, he has studied alternative education, ways to ameliorate the effects of poverty on children, teacher effectiveness and developmentally appropriate early childhood education.  Currently he is working on a quantitative study of the impact of a developmentally appropriate early childhood program on kindergarten readiness.
