Vision descriptors of facility

The building should be…

A Conference center that hosts a “world” conversation, Shows the world in Prescott College – a ripple effect and integrates the mission of the college into practical applications. It should Serve the core function of educating PC students and demonstrate the college’s expertise and specific traits with a Context of learning and Professionalism.

A Productive place for Intellectual gathering around ideas, Committed to students, faculty, and college, Integrating Different Disciplines, Interdisciplinary and hosts programs to strengthen the college And Enhance communication and Information exchange. Provide Educational outreach, Hosting different groups. Support Progressive Issues and problems to be addressed.

A place that Become the status quo not maintain the status quo and Welcomes change a facility that Demonstrate Learning and Provide Name recognition and is an Informed resource and Information outlet.

Evoke a Sense of involvement and be a Heart, Have Depth, be an Oasis, a Hub and be a Psychological center of campus as well as a Center for campus functions.

It should Have an Inviting First impression, Be Informative, Active space and Open up the imagination. It needs to Have a Social function but also Balance social and practical issues.

Sustainability descriptors

Built from Natural/authentic/Appropriate building materials, “Real” materials that are Sustainable, Organic, Green, Honest, Self-finishing materials which support … PC image, values and mission providing Service to Earth. Example - Wood floors. Solar powered.

The building should be a Service to Earth, Holistically designed with Sustainable systems, and be a Showcase with Limited affect on geography and ecology using local builders, materials, resources. It should be of Low impact on the environment and Support ecosystem. Do opposite of traditional architecture - Support ecosystem with Low impact.

The Facility should Be a Practical application of the college’s ideals, Be Cutting edge sustainable design, Be Healthful and be a demonstration of green ideals - learning from the building. It is a way to “Walk the Talk” of Prescott College and Inspire others who want to build.

Use Sustainable building technology, see Building as a system being flexible to doing things new ways and Adapt to four-season climate. Building should be Educational.

Community relationship descriptors

The facility should be A place, Hosting different groups, where people want to be, Welcoming, not intimidating, For use by all - Students, community, global leaders, Visitors, Faculty and able to Accommodate a global audience, but be Open to community/community involvement - Compatible with local community. It needs Comfortable couches.

A Public space where “The college turns itself inside out” and allows Students/Community/ to interact in Concentric circles moving outward to Enhance communication

It should House people who are from the greater world community, but also Inclusively Bringing people together physically and through technology - virtual community.

It should be a Student social meeting/gathering place that Spreads PC happenings to community and is a place for Work and Play with local community with a Sensitivity to town/gown issues providing Community outreach, Town, and College. It should Welcome a variety of interests, with Food, Meeting, Audio/Visual

It needs to be Accessible to all, Open all of the time with a Friendly welcoming staff and Accommodate the surrounding environment, Site, and Community. A place that Draws people in

It needs to …connect outward … reach into larger communities through Community Bike mechanic/center, providing Community space and encourage Underprivileged community outreach.

Aesthetic descriptors

The design should be Pleasing to the senses with a sense of Beauty, Balance with
Peaceful and calming spaces, including Landscape, Artwork, and Color. Design Beautiful and
Inspirational building.

The design should be Reflective of Prescott area, at a Human scale and be non-intrusive Architecture.

But with a Progressive Iconography, Architecture as a way to highlight stimulus, with Exciting classrooms (within reason), Every surface unique and vital.

Spaces to Integrate natural light with Skylights, Windows appropriately placed - Low windows, Big windows creating Inspiration of natural light and shade. Windows could be Up high looking out Framing views - moon rising, and the Vista becomes a visual inspiration, Look to rocks.

Need a Quality of wildness, Bring wildness into space, Interior spaces that seem like exterior spaces.

Design should Not be monolithic, perhaps Small buildings that open around courtyard, a Village.
The design should Do opposite of traditional architecture, feel Sexual, Roundness, Curves, The womb, use Domes, be Soft, Comfortable use Pillows with Comfortable couches.

The facility should be Design with purpose, Inspiring, Creative, Peaceful, Revolutionary, Exciting, Stimulating, and Sensory. It should be an Inviting, Comfortable, Colorful, and Attractive space.

The building should feel, Spacious, Alive, Safe, Earthy, Peaceful, Grand yet Humble, Tranquil/Meditative.

Design is Not just what building is- its where it is located- context, with a Beautiful aesthetic which inspires mindfulness and good work. It should have a Balance, Formal and Informal, Dedicated and Free spaces Professional and Individual, Inside and Outside, Large and Small, with an Honest quality.

The design should be Aware, Thoughtful and Clear and include Elemental- earth, wind, fire, water, and spirit. Have a Celebratory, Holistic, Integrated, Diverse, and Synergistic sense. Use Vaulted ceilings

Functions in Facility descriptors

The functions to be housed in the building include: a Large…place for meeting, Organized for front to back, or Circular, Meeting in the round, a Performance space, a Sacred space, a Speaker space, a “Ceremonial” space and Healing art classes.

A place for Information exchange, Computers/Library, Small library, Student study resource center a place for Student work, archive, with Multi-media and 24-hour accessibility.

The building should Provide Audience accommodation and Lodging.

Relationship to outdoors descriptors

The facility should retain a Quality of wildness, Bring wildness into space by a Connection to outside by Bring some of outside in creating an Awareness of surrounding. Should have a Sense of belonging and be Centered on creek and Open space.

The Site is important; building should be Sensitive to site Exterior space usability through Outdoor “rooms”, Indoor/Outdoor spaces such as Outside basketball, Garden.

The building should Connect to outside, Open to outside be Inspired by natural world, Take clues from surroundings and Take people outside, be a Transition zone with Bleeding spaces that draw you in, Integrating ecosystems.

The landscape should have Accessibility and an Honest quality with Every surface unique and vital and Edible planting.

Nuts and Bolts

The facility should be Useful, Affordable, Comfortable, Clean and maintained, with Better lighting, Handicap accessible and Enough bathrooms and Hot water with Mechanical, plumbing, etc, which reflect the natural systems. It should be Functional, Technology capable and Self-supporting economically. The Integration of technology should be more than computers.

There should be Plentiful parking with Drop off / Pick up areas but must Deal with traffic and noise through Acoustics.

Space requirements/functions

All spaces should be Flexible, Multi-purpose/Dynamic, Space that lends itself to different activities, with Adaptability to changing programs support Different activities at different times, and have Different scales, Multiple scales, Multiple use, Different size rooms with Easy adaptation and accessible. Multipurpose for student’s activities and Serving multiple functions, such as Posting a letter.

Classrooms to be - formal/intuitive, Flexible spaces which support people working in a circle, where the Physical environment enhances learning process, and Spaces do not trap professors with what is on walls.

Meeting room that look like meeting rooms, which Support different activities and functions, Different light, Flexible, Different programs and Space efficient.

Rooms should have an Open plan, Rearrange able- loft like that is Formal focus for meetings, Informal focus for hangout. Interchangeable rooms, but central space focused on soul with Pull out spaces for contemplation.

There should be spaces for Food, Physical activities, Yoga, a Student gallery and spaces to Help meet some of the REAL space problems.
