Frequently Asked Questions About Housing
Q: Are first-year students allowed to have cars?
First-year students are allowed to have cars, and like everyone else with a car, each person must obtain a parking permit. Free Parking permits are issued from the Book Store in the Rosewood Building.
Q: Are students responsible for cleaning their own living areas?
Yes. Students are responsible for sharing responsibilities with their roommates and suite/apartment-mates. Students can contact any Resident Assistant or stop by the Residence Life Office if they want to check out a vacuum cleaner. Health and Safety Inspections are conducted on a monthly basis by RAs to ensure that bedrooms and shared spaces are kept in a neat and sanitary manner at all times. Residents living in rooms that are repeatedly found in sub-standard condition may be subject to disciplinary action.
Q: Are there facilities for washing and drying clothes?
Laundry facilities with coin-operated washers and dryers are available at the Residence Life Office and in the Cholla Cottage Courtyard. It costs $1.50 to wash and $1.50 to dry.
Q: How many people will share a bathroom?
Depending on the hall, 1 to 4 people share a bathroom.
• Village Complex- in most cases, 3-4 people share a bathroom. The toilet room and shower room each allow one person at a time and are lockable. No more than two people share a sink/vanity area.
• Cottage Complex- In most cases 1 or 2 people share a bathroom.
Q: Is Prescott College responsible for my lost or damaged belongings?
The College is not responsible for students' personal belongings. We recommend students acquire renters insurance. Students should check with their parent/parents' homeowners' insurance company to see if they are covered while away at college. It is recommended that students get their personal belongings such as TVs and computers engraved and a copy of the serial number are kept in a safe place.
Q: May I cook in my room?
While we generally discourage cooking in bedrooms you may bring a rice cooker, crock pot, or coffee maker to use in the kitchen. You will have use of a college provided microwave, refrigerator, stove and oven. Other cooking appliances such as hot pots, electric frying pans, non-University provided microwaves and refrigerators, or anything with an exposed heating element or open flame are not permitted due to fire and safety hazards.
Q: May I decorate my room?
Yes! In fact, you are encouraged to personalize your room. While painting and other physical modifications to existing room structures are not allowed, you may add limited furniture, plants, posters, etc.
Please remember that nails and other items that will put a hole in the wall, no matter how tiny, are not allowed. If you have question about what to use to hang posters, please call Residence Life& Housing.
Please keep in mind that due to limited storage, you must keep all original room furniture in your room. It may be a good idea to contact your new roommate before deciding on a decorating scheme. Due to fire and safety regulations, building lofts or other raised platforms for beds and other furniture are not permitted.
Q: What if I am "written up" for breaking a policy?
The College and Residence Life & Housing policies and procedures are in place to ensure an academic environment where everyone is able to thrive. If a student violates a policy, then he/she will have a discussion with a Conduct officer. During the meeting the student will be able to tell his/her story.
The goal of the conduct process is to educate students on appropriate behavior and how their behavior impacts others. It is an administrative and educational process, not a legal and punitive one. Q: What if I don't want all the furniture in my room that the University provides?
The furniture that is in your room needs to stay there. Residence Life & Housing does not have the necessary storage space for extra furniture. Any furniture that is not in the room during monthly inspections or when a student checks out will be billed to the student(s).
Q: What if my roommate and I can't get along?
Although roommate assignments are considered permanent, should problems arise, talk with your RA or Housing Manager. RAs are able to help students work through most roommate issues. If a solution is not possible the Resident Housing Manager may approve a room change, but only if no solution is possible or previous attempts have failed. Room changes are subject to approval of the Housing Manager and are limited by available space. No room changes will occur in the first two weeks of each semester. This waiting time allows Residence Life & Housing staff to verify occupancy.
Q: What items will Prescott College furnish for my room?
Each student will be furnished with an extra long twin bed (36"x80", which requires extra long sheets), lockable closet space, a dresser, desk, chair and window coverings.
Q: What other appliances may I have in my room?
We encourage students not to bring everything from home with them, and to try to keep appliances and electronic entertainment to a minimum. Academics, events, socializing, and outdoor activities are likely to keep you quite occupied. However, permitted items include stereos, computers, hair dryers, curling irons, clocks, etc. To avoid duplicate purchases, you are encouraged to contact your roommate before bringing larger items like stereos. Items that may pose a fire or safety hazard, including halogen lamps, and candles are prohibited. Satellite dishes are also prohibited. Q: What size are the beds in the residence halls?
Mattresses in our residence halls are extra-long twin sized. (36"x80").
Q: When will I find out about my fall room assignment?
In early August, we will send each new student official notification confirming room assignment, mailing address and roommate's name and phone number.
Q: Who is responsible for damages?
Any damages are charged to the responsible party. If something is damaged, please report it to a Residence Life & Housing staff member. If the responsible party is not identified, the damages will be divided evenly by the residents who live in the area (if in a bedroom split between roommates, if in a common area, split between all residents of the unit).
