Rose Mary Mack
October 4 - November 2
Opening Reception, Friday October 4, 6:00-8:00 pm (Open to the public and always free.)
On view at the Prescott College Art Gallery at Sam Hill Warehouse (232 North Granite) during the month of October are artworks from one of Arizona’s preeminent artists, and Prescott’s own, Rose Mary Mack. This exhibition is the first comprehensive display of the full array of Rose Mary’s range of works covering her lifetime in the arts. Included in the exhibition are a variety of over 85 pieces including pastels, paintings, drawings and mixed media works from 1945 to 2003, illustrating her commitment to her art and her deep engagement with the Southwest landscape.
Ms. Mack grew up in New Mexico and Colorado and studied painting at Colorado Women’s College and the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, receiving her Master’s degree in 1947. After teaching art for a few years in Egypt, she returned to the United States and moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1955, where she resided until her death in 2005. Recognized by her peers for her abstract interpretations of the Southwest landscape, her work was included in Aspects of the Desert, the first exhibit of the Phoenix Art Museum in 1959, which also included works by Georgia O’Keefe, Philip Curtis and Max Ernst among others. Two short years later Mack was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum in November of 1961.
Her paintings have been shown locally, regionally and internationally from Prescott’s Cob Web Hall to Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris, France as well as being included in many public and private collections. A long time resident of Prescott, Rose Mary influenced generations of Arizona artists through her friendship, patronage, teaching, and support. Rose Mary was an early supporter of Prescott College and fund raising initiatives towards establishing an art gallery at Sam Hill Warehouse. Prescott College was a beneficiary of Rose Mary’s support for many years and is committed to housing and growing the archive of the works of Rose Mary Mack.
