Chief Enrollment Management and Marketing Officer

 

Prescott College, in partnership with the national search firm of Scott Healy & Associates, invites applications and nominations for the position of Chief Enrollment Management and Marketing Officer (CEMMO). Reporting to the Provost of the College, the CEMMO serves as a member of the President’s Circle and the Provost’s senior team and participates in institution-wide enrollment strategy planning and policy development. The CEMMO will be responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the College’s strategic enrollment initiatives and outcomes, while providing vision and leadership to the College in all areas of enrollment management and marketing.  He/she will provide leadership in designing the College’s enrollment strategies, financial aid optimization and is expected to make sophisticated use of high-quality, data-driven, evidence-based enrollment decisions, and utilize best practices in enrollment management and marketing. The CEMMO will be responsible for the enrollment of all new students: traditional freshmen and transfers, on-line and hybrid bachelors, masters and doctoral distance education programs.

 

Institution Overview

 

Prescott College began in the 1960s, a time of optimism and growth when leaders of a small town in the stunningly beautiful pine and chaparral country of central Arizona were searching for a new cultural identity. Dr. Charles Franklin Parker, minister of Prescott’s First Congregational Church and Prescott College founder, announced the ambitious project of creating the Harvard of the West – Prescott College. With a group of visionary leaders, Parker drew on the Congregationalist tradition of founding over 50 leading colleges and universities in America, beginning with Harvard in 1636, and including such institutions as Middlebury, Dartmouth, Amherst, Smith, Yale, Oberlin, Grinnell, Whitman, Colorado, Pomona and Scripps.

Many of the College's core philosophical and educational principles emerged in 1963, in a conference of state and nationally known leaders from higher education funded by the Ford Foundation’s Fund for Post-Secondary Education, Business and Industry. These principles crystallized around a central goal: To produce the leaders increasingly crucial to successfully meet the challenges of the changing world. Dr. Parker’s vision “for a pioneering, even radical experiment in higher education” and “to graduate society’s leaders for the twenty-first century who would be needed to solve the world’s growing environmental and social problems” seems especially prescient today, as humanity comes to terms with global warming and its potential for large-scale, adverse health, social, economic and ecological effects. Society looks to new models of education to better prepare students of all ages for their role as global citizens.

It is the mission of Prescott College to educate students of diverse ages and backgrounds to understand, thrive in, and enhance our world community and environment. Celebrating 50 Years of Innovation

 

Prescott College is Arizona’s only private, non-profit, liberal arts university and has regularly been recognized as one of the most innovative colleges in the nation for our various self-directed, interdisciplinary, competency-based programs.  The on-campus undergraduate program for traditionally aged first-time and transfer students begins with a month-long wilderness- or community-based orientation.  Working with individual graduation committees, students develop individualized degree plans and individualized degree titles.  All students are required to demonstrate competence in their field of study through a senior capstone project.  A unique block-semester calendar allows deep field- and community-based interdisciplinary course experiences that are problem-based and solution-oriented.  Students and faculty both write narrative evaluations of learning for each course that are included in the narrative transcript.  Although grades are optional, most students now elect grades.

 

Prescott College began offering distance education programs for undergraduate adult learners in the early 1980’s.  The hybrid “limited-residency” model combines study on campus with individualized courses with mentors in students’ local communities.  In 1991, the College began offering limited residency masters programs and in 2005 launched the world’s first Ph.D. in Sustainability Education.  In the past decade, the College has folded in online courses that integrate community-based experiential learning and e-portfolios.  Online courses now comprise the majority of credit production in the liberal arts and professional preparation distance programs. 

 

In order to increase affordability, Prescott College now offers “4+1” accelerated pathways to masters completion with “tuition-free” masters for undergraduate students. Although the College has traditionally served a nation-wide market, graduates from Arizona high schools are now guaranteed scholarship support to match in-state tuition prices in the Arizona system. This spring the College is launching 100% online delivery of the Social Justice and Community Organizing M.A. degree at a price point below that of any other similar online program.  The College is currently exploring how to leverage our flexible credit-based, competency-based model to further increase affordability for diverse learners.  With a long history of serving students from first nations, for example with our Center for Indian Bilingual Teacher Education, in the past decade the College has focused on recruiting and retaining Hispanic students from the southwest and currently 30% of students report non-white ethnicity. 

 

Prescott College maintains field stations in Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico and with the Maasai in Kenya. Prescott College is a member of the Ecoleague and the Consortium for Innovative Environments in Learning and students can study for multiple semesters at consortium schools seamlessly.

With a thriving mountain biking scene and over 450 miles of multi-use trails, Prescott is truly an outdoor paradise.  The City of Prescott is also home to several lakes and ample climbing spots, so outdoor adventurers have no shortage of areas to explore. A short drive from downtown, you’ll find the Granite Dells, which resemble the landscape of Joshua Tree. The Granite Dells are a favorite spot for climbing and hiking, or just enjoying a breathtaking Arizona sunset.

 

Within a two hour drive you can explore the Grand Canyon, Phoenix, Sedona or Flagstaff – each with its own unique climate, landscape and culture.

 

The Chief Enrollment Management and Marketing Officer Position Overview

 

The College seeks a dynamic and committed leader to inspire the next stages of Prescott College’s enrollment management and marketing vision and strategies. Working with the President, Provost and the entire College community, the CEMMO will be called upon to lead all enrollment management efforts.  By doing so, the CEMMO will ensure that Prescott College continues to fulfill its mission in service to its students and the community.  The new CEMMO will, in consultation with the President’s Circle and Provost’s senior team, help shape and inform a comprehensive marketing, communications, and recruiting plan for the College.  Working with the Provost’s senior team, the CEMMO will assist the College in crafting and implementing retention strategies to improve student persistence and success.

 

 

The successful candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • A strong history of progressively more responsible leadership positions in enrollment management and marketing
  • A proven, decisive, highly skilled manager, who is open, flexible, and respectful of alternative points of view, and very experienced in a collegial environment
  • Proven and successful experience in recruiting, enrolling and retaining a diverse student population; including traditional residential, on-line and adult learning populations at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Proven leader with success in bringing together differing and sometimes competing groups on campus into a cohesive and strong admissions, enrollment, and marketing team.
  • Considerable experience in data-driven enrollment operations that result in sustained growth in enrollment, academic quality, and diversity
  • A strong understanding of and experience in financial aid optimization
  • A strong understanding of, experience in creative marketing and outreach strategies including social media and digital initiatives
  • A commitment to outreach and service to ethnically diverse communities
  • Minimum of Eight (8) years of experience in higher education
  • A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree preferred)
  • A comprehensive understanding and appreciation for the importance of Prescott College’s mission as it relates to achieving enrollment objectives and student success
  • An appreciation for small, private, tuition-driven institutions competing in both regional and national markets and how the enrollment management and marketing function impacts the success of these institutions
