Director of First Year Experience and Core Curriculum

The Program Director is a 12-month, administrative exempt position with faculty status.   In addition to teaching and advising in the resident undergraduate program (approximately 4 course or advising equivalent load each year max), the Program Director reports to the dean to sustain and improve the core curriculum from first year experience (FYE) through completion of senior projects.  Towards the goals of improving teaching and learning as well as increasing retention and graduation rates, the director is responsible for:

  • Creating and sustaining a community of practice among the team of instructors and staff teaching and advising in FYE other resident undergraduate core courses (facilitating in-person and electronic communications);
  • Researching best practices in FYE and core curriculum for student success and sharing with involved staff and instructors;
  • Implementing collaborative planning and development processes for involved instructors and staff for better integration and alignment of curriculum / co-curriculum and academic support (e.g., syllabi, assignments, shared activities, student activities, coaching, advising, near peer mentor modules);
  • Planning and facilitating shared community-building activities across FYE and other core courses;
  • Creating an archive of syllabi, activities and other materials;
  • Creating guidelines, templates, and other training materials for instructors and staff in FYE and core course / experience;
  • Gathering input from students, staff and faculty involved in the FYE and other core experiences to inform future improvements to improve retention;
  • Compiling assessment and retention data as well information from the previous two bullet points in an annual report and improvement plan;
  • Other duties as assigned by the academic dean.

Requirements:

  • Appropriate credentials and/or tested experience (doctorate preferred) in a field conceptually or methodologically related to the curricular design, implementation and teaching of the FYE and Core Curriculum;
  • Evidence of appropriate levels of experience in first year experience or other general education / core curricula;
  • Expertise and experience in interdisciplinary curriculum design, learning communities, experiential pedagogy;
  • Commitment to improving student success;
  • Ability to design and facilitate collaborative group processes and to lead change processes;
  • Excellent writing, communication, and technology skills;
  • Understands and aligns with the College mission and the values and practices of the resident undergraduate program; and,
  • Experience, initiative and enthusiasm.  Sense of humor.
