Geology Expedition: Grand Canyon and the Colorado River
What better way to learn about geology and develop your scientific field research skills than to journey a mile down into the Grand Canyon, witnessing the evolution of time with every step or canoe paddle? This course explores modern and ancient landscapes and geologic processes of the Grand Canyon region revealing the link with geology to future climate changes.
Native Cultures of the Southwest: Understanding Myths, Movement, and Maize
Students will have a distinctive opportunity to delve into the rich, complex culture and geography of Indian peoples of the Southwest, specifically the Hopi community and the Colorado River Tribes to study with direct contact migration patterns, the effects of forced resettlement, ancient agricultural practices, and symbolism of the past and present to show the community of all cultures.
Landscape Photography: The Iconic Southwest
The Southwest contains iconic landscapes that have inspired photographers for 150 years. This course, designed for students with previous photographic instruction, will travel to locations such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and the Utah Canyonlands to study the works of early and contemporary photographers and advance their digital and analogue photography skills for their own photographic expression.
Adventure Challenge for Young Women: Climb to Confidence
In this young women-only course, you will work with expert mentors to pass through a series of challenging field-based adventure activities such as rock climbing. Each success will result in elevated responsibility and self-confidence, expand personal possibilities, and develop leadership skills while building strong friendships.
Fire Ecology: Managing Great Forests with Fire
Students will travel to field sites of the Mogollon Rim to the grasslands of the Malapai Borderlands region as they explore the dilemma faced by land managers and those concerned about the conservation of these environments. Students will study fire and other strategies being used to actively restore forests and will consider both the politics and economics of restoring the natural state of a vast ecoregion. Students will receive hands-on learning in environmental conservation and ecology.
