This competence encompasses all Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking populations of the Americas, including Latino/Chicano people residing in the United States and the Caribbean region. Because Arizona is a border state with a Hispanic population exceeding 20 percent, the College has a strong interest in studies of the history, culture, politics, and economic realities of this region. Field studies take classes to the College's research station on the Sea of Cortez and other parts of Mexico, as well as to Central America, the Caribbean, and the Andes. Latin American studies is a truly interdisciplinary field, drawing from related disciplines such as sociology, history, literature, music and arts, political science, geography and environmental studies, gender studies, and economics. Latin American Studies helps students learn to gain information from many sources, synthesize a worldview, and apply their learning in meaningful work.
