APA MANUAL OF STYLE ADAPTED FOR PRESCOTT COLLEGE MAP STUDENTS

APA MANUAL OF STYLE FOR PRESCOTT COLLEGE MAP & Ph.D. STUDENTS

The majority of this paper addresses information for students from Chapter 6 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2001, pp. 321-330). This section discusses Theses, Dissertations, and Student Papers and calls on each college or university to make decisions involving these written materials. We ask all students who are to use APA style in their writing to read and understand this section in the APA manual to understand why and how Thesis writing is different from a published journal article and to make the decision what form they will use for their written paper (for publication or not for publication). The APA Manual suggests that the graduate school’s specific requirements may depart from the style outlined in the Publication Manual. The outline below explains how Prescott College departs from the Publication Manual and what the expectations are for thesis writing and design.

Theses, Dissertations, and Student Papers

6.01 Final Manuscript. Please read and understand this section.

6.02 Content Requirements. Please refer to Cone and Foster’s (1993) Dissertations and Theses From Start to Finish: Psychology and Related Fields. This book addresses the usual sections found in a thesis. If the student is preparing a non-traditional thesis, the format and content should be discussed with the advisor and Core Faculty.

Preliminary Pages. The suggestions for the preliminary pages are in line with Prescott
College guidelines. This may be followed as instructed.

Abstract. See Section 1.07 of the APA manual for how to write an abstract and where
to place it in the thesis. The Abstract appearing in the preliminary pages is in line with
Prescott College guidelines.

Introduction: Please discuss the Introduction phase of your thesis with your advisor.
There is flexibility on the length and content of the Introduction but there can be some
reference material cited in the Introduction. It may be here that you discuss your
personal reasons for considering this thesis study and research.

Method, Results, and Discussion. This information remains the same as the
expectations of Prescott College.

Summary. Refer to Section 1.07 concerning Abstract substituting for the Summary.
Summaries may be more personalized and may also include Personal Reflection and
Future Research, as well as other sub-chapter titles. Check with your advisor.

References. Only references that are cited in the text should be found in the reference
section of the thesis. If there are other references that the student has read but are not
cited, the section would be called a Bibliography. Hanging indents are appropriate;
single-spaced, but use two spaces between different authors.

Appendixes. Please include the following in Appendix form as dictated by the APA Manual:
1. Verbatim instructions to participants
2. Original scales or questionnaires
3. Raw data
4. Sign-up sheets
5. Informed consent
6. Statistical calculations
7. Copy of the data collection instruments

Suggestions on Form:

Keep in mind that the thesis needs to be visually acceptable and always consider the reader. Title pages, Sections, Sub-Sections need to be visibly appealing and have continuity within the text. Keeping the reader in mind and creating a visually appealing design is important in presenting your work. The student can be somewhat creative with laying the thesis out to help the reader unless the document is being created for publishing and typesetting. Speak to your advisor if you are writing to publish. This will be important for the review by the Second and Third Reader.

Form Suggestions:
1. 12 point type
2. Courier Font or readable font.
3. Hanging indents for References is preferred.
4. Single-space References that have more than one line, but always double space between new authors.

Block quotes are 40 words in length, or more than 4 lines of quoted material. An indent of 5 spaces is fine. The period goes immediately after the quote with page number in parentheses following. Block quotes should be single-spaced

Reference citations, such as, one work by multiple authors in the body of the text, can be found in the APA manual (Section 3.95) and on our library website. Please make sure these reference citations are correct from the beginning of your writing in APA style – which should be from the day you arrive in MAP.

6.03 Manuscript Preparation Requirements

Please follow the instructions in this section as they are listed. This section is very clear and helpful for students who are designing the thesis structure.

If you have any specific questions not covered here, please speak with your advisor.
