Instructor Bio :
David James Baker, M.A., M.F.A., certificate instructor, is a Contributing Faculty member at Santa Fe University of Arts and Design, David was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Expressive Arts at Western New Mexico University. David has taught courses and workshops at The Rouen Film Festival, The Cancun International Film Festival, Santa Fe Community College, and New Mexico State University. David was the manager of internet technologies and digital media for the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to joining UCLA, David worked at Walt Disney technical services.
Certificate in Digital Storytelling and Digital Media
The art of storytelling, through integrated digital media arts, is changing the world – from entertainment to politics – from business and science to virtually every genre of the arts. Storytelling with digital media is now used by creative professionals in every field to reach around the globe expressing new ideas and creative solutions. This Certificate is designed to educate the diverse, creative communicators of tomorrow. The certificate provides a solid foundation of applied skills and theoretical knowledge and enables graduates to use new methods of storytelling to advance personal, professional, and/or academic work.
Participants learn the art of storytelling through the creation and integration of media. Participants are encouraged to integrate personal or professional projects in to each course. The certificate program is designed to enable participants to produce a portfolio of their work by certificate completion.
The skills of this certificate enable graduates to work in a variety of professions: community developer, environmental journalist, digital storyteller, digital filmmaker, media designer, print designer, web designer, animator, producer, game designer, business communicator, marketing specialist, social media communicator, and more.
The certificate program requires participation in all six courses. Participants are also welcome to take individual courses, but will not receive the certificate. The six courses include:
The Art of Storytelling - October 14-16, 2011
This course provides a weekend-long, experiential overview of the art of storytelling. Participants receive a greater understanding of how to create their story in contemporary media formats. This weekend course enables participants to discover and tell their story. Additional topics include performing your story before a live audience and in front of a camera. The essentials of classical story structure are discussed.
Digital Photo Editing with Photoshop - November 11-13, 2011
This course provides a weekend introduction to the basic principles and techniques of image editing and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. The instructor facilitates use of the essential Photoshop tool sets, workspace, and some of the creative possibilities. The classroom and laboratory enables participants to begin realizing their own projects with hands-on knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
Digital Film & Video Editing with Final Cut Pro - January 6-8, 2012
This course provides a weekend introduction to the basic principles and techniques of graphic editing and manipulation using Apple Final Cut Pro (FCP). The instructor facilitates use of the essential FCP tool sets, workspace, and some popular creative possibilities for narrative story-tellers. The classroom and laboratory enables participants to begin realizing their own projects through hands-on knowledge of Final Cut Pro.
Digital Illustration & Graphics with Adobe Illustrator - February 17-19, 2012
This course provides a weekend introduction to the basic principles and techniques of graphic editing and manipulation using Adobe Illustrator. The classroom and laboratory enables participants to begin realizing their own projects with hands-on knowledge of Adobe Illustrator.
Digital Story Production - March 2-4, 2012
This course provides a weekend introduction to the basic principles and techniques of digital acquisition of image and sound for digital storytelling. The instructor facilitates use of the essential techniques of production and creative possibilities for digital media producers. The classroom and laboratory enables participants to begin realizing their own projects with increased knowledge of digital capture and acquisition of content.
Social Media – Group Marketing & Communications - April 13-15, 2012
This course provides a weekend introduction to the basic principles and techniques of crowd-sourcing, group marketing, and communications using social media platforms. The instructor facilitates use of the essential techniques and creative possibilities for social media. The classroom and laboratory enables participants to begin realizing their own uses of social media for personal and/or professional purposes.
Course Prerequisites: Prior computer experience a must!
Course Requirements: Bring your own Mac compatible external hard drive (LaCie 7200 rpm min. recommended). If bringing personal laptop computer, it must contain all software required for course.
