Prescott College Awards New Scholarship
Prescott College announces the creation of the Gemma Bryce Kemp-Garcia endowed
scholarship.
Gemma, a Prescott College student who graduated in May 1998, was tragically
killed in July 1998 at the age of 26, while traveling in Wyoming. Gemma earned
her degree in outdoor education degree and was particularly interested in
the well being of at-risk youth. She worked with inner-city youth as a wilderness
instructor and created a group for adolescent girls "On Becoming Women" for
her senior project.
Gemma's mother, Margot Garcia, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, has initiated
the scholarship "to honor Gemma and encourage other students to continue
the work she loved so passionately," Garcia said.
The annual scholarship will be awarded to a Prescott College student from
New Mexico or a student planning a project with youth in New Mexico.
Meghan Burke, a third year student from Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a double
major in photography and education, is the first recipient of the Gemma Bryce
Kemp-Garcia memorial scholarship.
For her senior project next year, Meghan will create a non-profit youth
center in Prescott modeled after programs in New Mexico and Colorado. After
graduation, she hopes to teach high school and coach girls' sports.
For more information about the scholarship, contact the Prescott College
Advancement Office at 778-2090 ext. 4500.
