PRESCOTT COLLEGE ENDORSES EARTH CHARTER
Prescott - Prescott College is among 5,100 organizations and individuals
around the world to endorse the Earth Charter, a treaty outlining principles
for creating a just, sustainable, and peaceful society for the 21st century.
In an amazing grassroots drafting process over 12 years, thousands of people
in 56 countries gathered in cities, villages, meeting halls, schools and
in open air settings to weave their shared dreams for a better world into
the Earth Charter. The Earth Charter is about the environment, but so much
more, too. Major principles also address respect and care for the community
of life, social and economic justice, democracy, nonviolence and peace.
“By endorsing the Earth Charter, Prescott College is committed to
the spirit and aims of the charter and are willing to work for the implementation
of the values and principles of the document,” said Maya Jones, a Prescott
College master’s student serving as the student representative on the
board of trustees. “I envision Prescott College being a place to where
the community looks as an example of how to live sustainably.”
On Sept. 28 Prescott College will host a day-long summit, along with other
cities across the country, to discuss how to incorporate the values
and principles of the Earth Charter into everyday life, both as a community
and as individuals.
