SUMMER BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAM FREE TO CHILDREN OF PRESCOTT
Prescott College is offering a free breakfast and lunch program for the
children of Prescott over the summer.
Any child from Prescott under the age of 18 is eligible for this program.
Breakfast and lunch will be served at the Organic Alley Café on 217
Garden St. (behind 220 Grove Ave.) from June 3 to August 9, Monday through
Friday. Breakfast will served from 8- 9:30 a.m. and lunch from 12:30- 2 p.m.
A grant from the Yavapai Community Foundation, a donation from the Prescott
Area Arts and Humanities Council and the National School Lunch Program, a
federally assisted meal program, fund the program.
Kiarah Morgan, the manager of the Prescott College café and an Adult
Degree Program student in sustainable community development, is directing
the program, which is in its second year. The program fed more than 7,300
meals to children last summer.
This year the College is buying produce from local farmers, and will serve
mostly organic, pesticide-free meals. "This aspect of the program reflects
the College's value system and goals," said Morgan. "In addition,
the campus location will allow more students, staff and faculty to become
involved."
"Nationwide, a very small percentage of children can receive free meals
during the summer because there are not enough sites. In Arizona, only 20
percent of the children eligible for the program receive meals," she
said. "This is a great way for Prescott College to give back to the
community and provide a needed service."
