Tuition Changes
The Board of Trustees has set the tuition for the Master of Arts Program 2008 - 2009 academic school year:
- full time tuition (12-15 semester credits): $6,804;
- per credit tuition (6-11 semester credits ): $567 per credit.
Please note that as of Fall 2009 the tuition range for credits from 12-15 will no longer be available. All tuition will be on a per credit basis.
Academic Governance and Program Policy Change for Counseling Psychology
Due to the specific state and national boards that govern the delivery of higher education in the field of counseling, the Prescott College Counseling Psychology program has a separate steering committee that oversees the CP program. Because of the specificity of board requirements, the CP delivery model and many of the program requirements are unique to the CP program.
Students enrolled in the CP program must refer to CP Handbook. While information in this general MAP Handbook may useful as far as scholarship and such, the specific procedures and polices are different here (for ES, ED, AE, and HU) than those in CP. All students enrolled in the CP program must refer to and be accountable to the CP handbook.
Changes in Academic Requirements
Students are responsible to the academic or graduation requirements of the program at the time at which they matriculated. Any changes to academic policies will be recorded here on this page with a date of change noted.
All students are required to follow the procedures that are current as posted in the online MAP Student Handbook (which includes the MAP Process Handbook and the MAP Policies Manual).
Core Foundations Course
Effective for students matriculating Fall 2008 and later. Students who enroll in the Master of Arts Program are required to complete one 3 credit core foundation course within their degree program area. Details are specific to each of the five degree programs.
Registration Options Change (for students not in a professional preparation program)
Effective for students matriculating Fall 2008 and later. Students in their first semester of enrollment in MAP are asked to enroll for and complete no more than a maximum of 12 credits. Following the first semester any student who has successfully completed one full time semester will then have the option of requesting permission from her advisor and core faculty to enroll for up to 15 credits in a semester.
(Note: Students in a professional preparation program, such as counseling psychology or education certification, will still have the option of enrolling for full time [currently 12-15 credits] and then completing up to 15 credits of work from the standard program curriculum.)
Beginning with the Fall 2009 semester MAP will no longer provide a full time range of 12-15 credits; rather all students will enroll for the exact number of credits that they plan to complete. The number of credits on the registration form, the study plan, and the end-of-semester materials must all match exactly.
Summer Enrollment
As of summer 2009 MAP will offer a summer semester. This semester will allow students to enroll for a minimum of 3 semester hours and a maximum of 6 semester hours.
The following coursework is available to students during the summer enrollment periods:
- residential institutes sponsored by Prescott College faculty (such as EAMH or EATSI)
- supervised practica
- any specific courses sponsored by the Graduate Program Council (these will be announced on the MAP Current Students main web page)
The following work may not be undertaken during summer semesters:
- individual independent courses in theory or thesis development
- an unsupervised practicum
Residency Requirement Changes
Effective for All Students as of Fall 2008. As promised, we have adjusted the residency requirements for all students as of fall 2008. These changes were made in order to reduce travel costs for students, to reduce the overall carbon footprint for the MAP residency community, and to support and encourage student participation in residential activities that are more specific to your own areas of study.
Please see this page for current residency requirements.
Note: Since this reduces a current requirement it is effective for all students.
Registering for the Master's Thesis
Effective for All Students as of Fall 2008. There are new procedures for registering for thesis development and completing the thesis. Please see this page for thesis registration and completion procedures.
Note: As this is a change in procedures and not graduation requirements it is effective for all students.
New Evaluation Forms
Effective for students matriculating Fall 2008 and later. We have created a course evaluation form to use in the eos materials that has space on it for one course description, the student evaluation of that single course, and the advisor evaluation of that single course.
Students who enrolled before Fall 2008 may choose to use the old form until graduation, or may use the new form.
Upcoming Changes to Program: Currently Under Discussion
Because faculty and students talk about changes or developments that are in process, we have created this place to provide you with the current final word on anything that is under discussion.
As soon as any decision is made, all students, advisors, faculty, and staff are notified of the final change in writing by the administration or faculty of MAP.
If you hear about a change that is not included here, that is because it is not a change that is under discussion (perhaps it is simply someone's suggestion). If you hear about a requirement that is not in this handbook or is not identified on this page as being under discussion for implementation, then please understand that it is not a requirement of the Master of Arts Program; it may be a requirement of the faculty person who communicated it to you.
Any student or advisor who has questions about these items, or about something that is not included here, is encouraged to go directly to her core faculty for clarification. We will add all items here as soon as they are known.
Calendar Changes
We will be adjusting the MAP calendar as of fall 2009. Here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions about this change.
Details about this will be posted in the handbook later in the year. The changes will shorten the semesters slightly, move the start date for each up a little earlier, and will include the addition of a short summer enrollment period. More to come.
QP Alternative Options
A process has been tested within our education program during the 06-07 academic year to accommodate those students who have demonstrated advance graduate level scholarly writing early in their program. This process allows for an alternative to the QP process. The MAP faculty have decided to adopt this process for the program.
Details on the procedure have not yet been worked out, although students may discuss this with their core faculty on a case by case basis. The process allows a student whose advisor feels that all packets have consistently demonstrated the level of scholarly writing that is expected in a research paper and master's thesis to use an alternative model for the QP. In lieu of a standard QP, at the advisor's recommendation, the student may submit the literature review for her thesis plan, along with an overview of the methods section and IRB process (if applicable). If this is acceptable, it may then be used to meet the QP requirement as well as the thesis plan requirement. Please note, this can only be done at the request and recommendation of a graduate advisor. Again, final details have yet to be set; once they are, all students and advisors will notified of the change.
