Ellen's areas of expertise are counselor education, narrative therapy, the politics of race, class, gender, and critical psychology. The courses she teaches are designed for students interested in personal and social change, as they require the learner to blend self-reflection with social consciousness, and social action. Ellen is particularly interested in helping students analyze the role of power, well-being, oppression and liberation within mainstream psychology, and encouraging students to use their knowledge and position to help eradicate the injustices and inequities preferred by the mental health and other social, economic and political systems. In her work as an educator, Ellen encourages her students to question valued assumptions on which the field of psychology is based, and apply the concepts of critical psychology to psychological inquiry, research methods, and clinical practice.
