Interdisciplinary Faculty Positions at Prescott College
Prescott College seeks a cohort of diverse teacher-scholars to envision and teach new interdisciplinary courses in our core curriculum as well as across our bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs and departments. We invite experts from a variety of fields to creatively imagine how their discipline(s) and experiences connect to our mission and to compelling contemporary issues challenging diverse communities across the globe. Guided by the motto “For the Liberal Arts, the Environment, and Social Justice” and driven by a mission that centers experiential learning within an interdisciplinary curriculum, Prescott College is celebrating our 50th year as a small private, nonprofit liberal arts university offering on-campus and distance learning programs blending liberal learning and professional preparation. Over eighty percent of Prescott College graduates report choosing their life’s work in order to help build a more just and sustainable world. Our students are changing communities, environments, and lives through their careers in social and environmental justice, conservation, mental and emotional health, arts and humanities, and in classroom-based and outdoor experiential education.
Ideal candidates are drawn to the distinctive motto and mission because they know that preparing leaders to address the crises of the 21st century requires a different approach to education. They have begun to innovate in teaching and scholarship. They are excited to be given the freedom to create the problem-based and solution-oriented learning environments of their dreams. Successful candidates are student-centered and constantly exploring how to better support the success of diverse learners. They have experience with a range of ways to learn: face-to-face, field- and community-based learning; hybrid or online learning; service learning or other experiential learning. Faculty members at Prescott College enjoy collaborating with one another to foster interdisciplinarity and a culture of innovation and with staff to support recruiting and retaining diverse learners.
The specific academic fields for this cluster of hires are open but should connect conceptually or methodologically to the departmental offerings of Prescott College. In general, the Prescott College faculty seeks scholars who can help students build the academic knowledge, practical abilities, and positive dispositions to collaborate with diverse communities for just and sustainable solutions to international and global realities such as
- Climate change, food, water, and resource management;
- Globalization, social, and environmental justice;
- Changing needs of diverse learners in classroom, outdoor or expeditionary environments;
- Multigenerational experiences of trauma and community responses for resilience, health, and wellness;
- Communication and citizenship: writing, rhetoric, social media, and the crisis of truth;
- The need for collaborative enterprise, social entrepreneurship and just ecological design in business, organizations and governance.
Addressing complex problems requires students to have both critical understandings and practical skills. So we seek faculty members who can also help engage students and expand their tool kits with skills such as geographic information systems, social media, digital media production, qualitative and quantitative social or natural science research, group facilitation, business plan development, coaching, outdoor leadership, wilderness skills, etc.
